Can’t I Just Be a Good Person?
It’s the go-to answer most people give when asked about eternity: “I think I’ll be fine. I’m a good person.”
You may not be perfect, but you try to treat others right, help when you can, and live a decent life. Surely that counts for something… right?
The idea that “good people go to heaven” is one of the most common beliefs in the world. But it’s not what the Bible teaches. In fact, the Bible says something far more shocking—and far more hopeful.
The Standard Isn’t “Better Than Most”
If you were to die today and stand before God, how would you measure your life? Most people compare themselves to others:
- “I’ve never killed anyone.”
- “I treat people better than my coworker does.”
- “At least I’m not out committing crimes.”
But the standard isn’t your neighbor. It’s God.
“Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” — Matthew 5:48
That changes everything. Because no matter how nice we try to be, none of us are perfect. And God’s standard is perfection.
So Let’s Be Honest — How “Good” Are We?
Let’s test ourselves against the Ten Commandments, God’s moral law:
- Have you ever told a lie?
- Ever stolen something — even time from your boss?
- Used God’s name casually or disrespectfully?
- Looked at someone with lust?
- Held bitterness or hatred toward someone?
By God’s standard, we’re not good — we’re guilty.
“There is no one righteous, not even one.” — Romans 3:10
That’s bad news. But you can’t understand the good news until you grasp just how much you need it.
“But My Good Deeds Outweigh My Bad”
Imagine standing before a judge for breaking the law—speeding, stealing, or worse—and saying, “But Your Honor, I also helped my grandma last week.”
Good deeds don’t erase crimes. A just judge punishes wrongdoing, no matter what good you’ve done.
And God is a perfect judge. He won’t sweep sin under the rug. But… He also made a way for justice and mercy to meet.
The Cross Is God’s Answer to Our Guilt
God saw that we could never earn our way to Him. So He came to us.
Jesus Christ lived the perfect life we couldn’t. He never sinned—not once. Then, in the greatest act of love in history, He laid down His life on the cross. He took the punishment your sin deserves.
“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8
Three days later, He rose again, proving His power over sin and death. And now, He offers forgiveness and eternal life—not through your good works, but through His grace.
Salvation Is Not Earned. It’s Received.
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith… not by works, so that no one can boast.” — Ephesians 2:8–9
You don’t get to heaven by being a “good person.” You get there by admitting you’re not—and trusting in the only One who is.
That’s the Gospel. That’s the Good News. That’s your way out of judgment and into eternal life.
So, Are You Ready to Stop Trusting Yourself?
Stop trying to earn heaven. You can’t. But Jesus already did the work. You just need to repent (turn from your sin) and believe (trust Him fully).
Don’t wait. Tomorrow isn’t promised.
A Simple Prayer
You can pray something like this:
“God, I’ve tried to be a good person, but I know I’ve broken Your law. I’m guilty. But I believe that Jesus died in my place and rose again. I turn from my sin, and I put my trust in Him alone. Please forgive me, and make me new. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
If you prayed that — we’d love to talk with you and help you grow in your new walk with God.
