Why You’re Not a “Good Person” (And Why That Matters)
Focus Keyphrase: Why you’re not a good person
Slug: why-youre-not-a-good-person
The Standard Isn’t Other People — It’s God’s Law
We often measure ourselves against those around us, but God’s measurement isn’t relative — it’s perfect holiness. He gave us His moral law, the Ten Commandments, as a mirror to reveal our true condition.
Ever lied? Even a “white lie” makes you a liar in God’s eyes. Stolen something, no matter how small? That makes you a thief. Looked with lust? Jesus said that’s adultery of the heart (Matthew 5:28). One sin is enough to make us guilty before a holy God.
Good Deeds Can’t Erase Sin
Some try to balance the scales by doing more good than bad, but that’s not how God’s justice works. In a human court, a criminal can’t say, “Judge, I know I robbed that store, but I also give to charity.” Justice still demands a penalty.
Our good deeds can’t wash away our guilt. We need something — or Someone — to pay the penalty for us.
The Good News: God Made a Way
God’s justice demands that sin be punished, but His mercy provided the answer. Two thousand years ago, Jesus Christ — fully God and fully man — lived a perfect life we couldn’t live, and died the death we deserved. On the cross, He took the punishment for our sins. Then He rose again, defeating death.
When we repent — turning from sin — and put our trust in Jesus alone, God forgives us and gives us eternal life.
What About You?
If you stood before God today, would He find you “good enough” by His standard? Or would you be guilty? The Bible warns that those who die in their sins will face eternal separation from God in hell — but it also promises that today can be the day of salvation.
Don’t wait for “someday.” None of us are guaranteed tomorrow. Humble yourself before God, admit your guilt, and receive His free gift of grace.
